3D Objects

These images correspond to a task where I had to create 3-D models for use in a game level.  I had to use a visual reference to base my models on.

Battle Axe
To make this axe I first decided to use a cylinder shape and squash and stretch it to form the handle.  When I started to make the axe head I tried looking for a shape that would fit but after consulting with the lecturer I decided to use splines instead. I converted the spline to an editable poly and extruded it to form a solid shape.  I then selected the outside edges and used the loop or ring button to select them all.  Once they were all selected I scaled the edges out in order to sharpen them out so the axe looked functional.

Helmet

I was originally going to be recreating a mediaeval bucket helmet that was worn by Knights but after struggling to find a tutorial for this particular helmet I decided to make a stereotypical Viking helmet since there were many tutorials for it.  I started off with a sphere and then split it in half and stretching the top of it upwards.  I then selected a few polygons and pushed them into the top of the sphere.  I dragged out the polygons around the edges and centre of the sphere in order to create the ridges of the helmet.  To create the horns I had to use the spline tool to draw a rough outline.  I converted the splines an editable Polly and smoothed them to create the horn shapes.  Even though the splines didn't create thick horns I do like the branch shaped horns quite a lot as they add a bit of artistic flair to them.  The helmet looks like something a forest dwelling army might wear.

Morning star

I originally set out to create a morning star mace weapon that was used during mediaeval times.  I searched you Tube for a tutorial for my original weapon idea.  The tutorial I found was showing me how to make a flail mace instead, despite this i went ahead.  To start with I had to create a long cylinder for the handle and then extrude a few sections at the base to form the grips.  I then created a ring at the top of the handle for the chains to link in to.  I then created another ring but this time I used the soft selection tool to stretch the shape to form a link in the chain.  I duplicated this shape multiple times, rotating them every so often until it linked into the ball at the end.  I used a geosphere and extruded a sporadic number of polygons to form the base of the spikes.  I then used the weld button to sharpen the selected points.

  • Uploaded image of tree in Photoshop.
  • Duplicated image onto another layer and magic waned the white areas of image.
  • With the duplicated layer i filled in the tree with white.
  • on another layer i filled with black and merged the black and white layers together.
  • Created another layer with the original tree and used the burn tool to fade out the sharp, white edges on the tree.
  • Changing the layer to colour setting, i painted the grey areas in with dark green.
  • I merged the dark green

I want to be.... Sledgehammer

  • Added cylinder 16 height 4 width
    • squashed it to look like handle by stretching the X and Y axis and bevel
    • Align tool with maximum on both target object and current object with allign position Z
    • chamfer and inset were used to shape the cube into a hammer shape.
    • edit UVW. selected ends of the hammer and dragged them out the way in the UVW window. i used the planar projection maps.
    • after adjusting both UVW objects i attached both the handle and head.
    • I then unwraped the UVW on the whole hammer and rendered it.
    • in photoshop: duplicate background layer, desaturate image in Image > adjustments > desaturate. ctrl + i to invert, change blender mode to multiply. create another background layer and fill it with white. THIS LAYER MUST BE USED FOR TEXTURE ONLY.
    • I transfered the photoshop file into 3DS Max to complete the hammer.

3D shield

In Max i created a model of a medieval shield, complete with realistic lighting.

First i imported an image of a shield from moodle into 3dsmax. i placed the image onto a plane. Then i copied the plane without the photo, i adjusted the plane's vertexes to line up with the sheild, i also added depth to the plane to add a 3d effect by adjusting its control points. Next i added the texture by joining the mesh frame together and then taking it into Photoshop to add texture to it. By adjusting the levels and brightness/contrast i was able to add light effects to the shield as well as adding presence to the gilding. The end result is above.
